These are the leaves of the sassafras tree, Sassafras albidum. This is the plant that they made sassafras tea from and the roots smell just like root beer, which is what they used to make drinks. The leaves are used to make file', which is used in file' gumbo. These are growing in Morgan County Alabama USA.
